United Airlines customers could book exceptionally cheap tickets for a few hours on Thursday.
United customers that scooped up free airfare are in luck. The airline said Friday that it will honor the tickets that were accidentally given away for next-to-nothing.
Some customers were able to book flights for $ 0 and ended up paying about $ 10 total after taxes thanks to an error in filing the fares to its computer system. Others got their tickets for $ 5 or $ 10 each, paying only the Sept. 11 security fee.
“We’ve reviewed the error that occurred yesterday and based on these specific circumstances, we will honor the tickets,” the airline tweeted Friday.
United would not disclose to the Associated Press just how many bargain tickets were sold, or how much money the mistake would cost them.
The glitch worked out exceptionally well for one military mom. She said on Facebook that she was looking to get her son and his wife home for a couple of days in October before he deployed. She stumbled upon $ 10 tickets from Los Angeles International Airport to General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee.
“Thinking there was NO way it was real, I went through the reservation process figuring I’d only be out $ 20 if it fell through,” she wrote. “I am one HAPPY Marine Mom!”
