Weather, age, proximity of outdoor activities and what people do for work can all influence a state’s exercise level, according to Gallup.
People in Vermont and Hawaii like to break a sweat, but residents of Delaware and West Virginia need to get moving.
So concludes a new national poll by the researchers at Gallup, who interviewed over 178,000 adults in all 50 states about their exercise habits from January-December 2013.
Just over 65% of Vermonters work out three or more days a week for at least 30 minutes, followed closely by Hawaii residents at 62.2%. Mostly western states round out the top 10, including Montana, Alaska, Colorado and Oregon, with Nebraska and North Dakota coming in 9th and 10th.
On the flip side, you probably won’t have to wait in line for a treadmill in Delaware, where only 46.5% of residents reported reaching the 3-days-a-week threshhold. West Virginia was in next-to-last place at 47.1%, and New York also made the dishonor list at 49.3%.

Overall, Americans exercised slightly less in 2013 than the previous year, possibly because 2012 was warmer and dryer overall, Gallup found.
The average age of a state, the availability of outdoor activities, and the type of work performed by residents can also influence activity level, researchers wrote.
In the same study, Vermonters also ranked tops for eating vegetables. Nearly 68% of residents said they ate at least five servings four or more days per week. Oklahoma came in last on that list, at 52.3%.
