PORT ST. LUCIE — Yoenis Cespedes’ latest purchase is not a new Lamborghini or Ferrari. The Cuban slugger who has an affinity for flashy clothing and expensive cars bought a pig.
A Grand Champion hog, that is.
At the St. Lucie County Fair with a group of teammates on Saturday night, Cespedes bought the award-winning hog. It was part of a charity for a local children’s group and the Mets centerfielder laid down $ 7,000 for the pig, according to the team.
“He just wanted to help the kids out,” a team spokesperson said. “He saw they were trying to raise money.”
The pig was a reported 275 pounds.
Fans at the fair snapped pictures with Cespedes and other players. A woman on Twitter confirmed that Cespedes had purchased her grandson’s hog.
No word on whether the pig will be housed next to the Lamborghini, the Alfa Romeo or Polaris Slingshot that Cespedes showed off last week at the Mets’ spring training facility, but Cespedes does reportedly have a ranch in the area where he stays at during spring training.
Though how long the pig lasts at the ranch is anyone’s guess. At the end of a 2011 showcase video, Cespedes is seen roasting a pig at a barbecue.
