Harry Styles got shaken up onstage while performing with One Direction Wednesday, hours after bandmate Zayn Malik announced he was quitting the band.
Cell phone video shot by a fan at the band’s show in Jakarta, Indonesia Wednesday showed mussy-coifed pop singer wiping his eyes and appearing to collect himself while bandmates around him performed the song “Diana.”
The BBC, the Daily Mail and other outlets reported that the boy band member broke down in tears, though a YouTube user who posted the video and several others from the show at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium said someone “threw something” that hit Harry in the face.
“Someone threw something at Harry and it hit him in the eye, which is apparently why it looked like he was crying,” she wrote.
Online clamor over the Styles video amounted to one small moment in a frenzied social media storm following Malik’s announcement Wednesday that he was leaving the band in order to live like “a normal 22-year-old.”
After the Jakarta show, Styles and the rest of his remaining bandmates addressed their mourning fans in several posts on Twitter.
“All the love as always. H,” Style wrote.
Payne chimed in at around 1:00 a.m. Thursday.
“So glad to be in bed after a long and strange 24 hours,” he wrote.
“Been a crazy couple of days but know that we are going to work harder than ever to deliver the best album we’ve ever made for you guys!” Louis Tomlinson added, while Niall Horan called the group’s devoted followers “the best fans in the world. “
In his announcement on the boy band’s Facebook page Wednesday morning, Malik apologized to fans, saying his life with the group had been “more than I could have ever imagined.”
“But I have to do what feels right in my heart. I am leaving because I want to be a normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight,” he wrote.
The move followed a significant amount of unwanted publicity the singer received after was spotted holding hands with a woman – who was not fiancée Perrie Edwards – in a club in Thailand.
