Robinson Cano says he ‘loves’ the Yankees, and won’t make a decision on his future until after the World Series.

Robinson Cano says he hadn’t made any decisions about his future yet. But the Yankee second baseman admits that he’s thought about the possibility that Thursday’s home finale could be his last game in pinstripes at the Stadium.

“Well, yeah,” said Cano, who will become a free agent after the season. “Who knows what’s going to happen? But I always play this game like it’s the last day. This year, I enjoyed being here and I’m going to enjoy the last day, being here with these guys.

“Nobody said I’m leaving, nobody said that I’m staying. I haven’t decided anything yet. Let’s see what happens after the World Series.”

But, Cano added: “Don’t get me wrong. I love this team.”

YANKEES KEEP ‘EM, DUMP ‘EM

And that, perhaps, is a window into the difficult decision Cano is facing following the season. He’s never worn another uniform and he became a superstar in pinstripes. He even says he believes in the future of the club, though stalwarts such as Mariano Rivera and Andy Pettitte are retiring and Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez are aging.

Could Cano see himself in another uniform? “Man, it’s hard,” he said. “But at the same time, I understand it’s a business. They have to decide what is the best for them, and I have to decide what is best for me and my family.”

Robinson Cano has three-straight seasons of at least 25 homers and 100 RBI, which puts him with Rogers Hornsby and Jeff Kent as the only second basemen to reach that milestone.

Cano, who turns 31 in October, easily will be the top free agent available this winter and is perhaps poised to become the biggest star on the Yankees, if he stays. He entered Wednesday’s game against the Rays batting .314/.383/.517 with 27 home runs and 105 RBI. He has three career seasons of at least 25 homers and 100 RBI, which, among second basemen, is topped only by Jeff Kent (six seasons) and Rogers Hornsby (four).

Asked how he felt about the future of the Yankees, Cano replied, “This is a team that always had a lot of superstars, future Hall of Famers. I know Jeter, A-Rod, they have three or four years left. Mariano’s leaving, Pettitte. They always find a way to get guys to get this team to win. We got CC (Sabathia), Tex (Mark Teixeira) and A.J. (Burnett) in ’09 and we won a championship. They always get the right pieces to win.”

Some of those pieces are already in place in pinstripes, Cano said. “You’ve got Tex, you’ve got Alex, you got Jeter. You still have a lot of guys who can still play this game, superstars. You’ve got Ichiro (Suzuki), you got (Alfonso) Soriano. I mean, you got two guys leaving but there’s always going to be somebody here.”

Cano says he wants to go over pros and cons with his family before making any decision about where he plays next season, noting, “I want to get advice, because your mom and dad always want the best for you.”

If the Yankees do not make the playoffs — their tragic number for elimination entering Wednesday’s game was one — Cano plans to “go on vacation, relax.

“And then when the day gets closer, that’s when I want to sit down with my family and decide what we’re going to do.”
