Bungie Outlines Destiny 2’s Seasonal Updates

With the PC version of Destiny 2 launching this week, players have been wondering what the future of the game will be. Faction Rallies and Iron Banner events have given players new armor sets to work toward, but haven't too different from the base game and have been short-term content drops that haven't alleviated some of the game's problems (such as slot machine workings of getting gear drops from reputation vendors). At this year's Twitchcon, Bungie outlined what the future of Destiny 2 updates will look like, addressing some concerns while raising a few questions.

First, the team announced that Destiny 2 is now in the hands of the Live Team, the group that was responsible for the latter-day content updates to Destiny. Destiny 2 will have four yearly "Seasons," each of which will make major balance changes the cooperative and competitive aspects of the game as needed and offer some new events, multiplayer maps, and gear for players to play with. The team also announced the return and continuation of three major events: The Dawning (which now involves Tower Ice Hockey and snowball fights), The Iron Banner, and Faction Rallies, each of which will offer new gear every season. A new event, Clarion Calls, will also allow players to earn Bright Engrams twice as quickly if they're playing with clanmates. The contents of Bright Engrams will also change every season.

Bungie has some new plans for the future of this gear. First, the team is reworking the way Iron Banner gear works by adding energy-based versions of those weapons, as well as giving them new perks that will make them stand out from regular gear. This will also apply to the Trials of the Nine weaponry. There will also be seasonal ornaments for these new weapons and gear, which will be unlocked by completing various objectives during that season (called Rituals), after which that specific ornament cannot be earned again. Additionally, players will be able to purchase future seasonal gear with faction tokens and Legendary Shards. The team also showed off some of the new gear for The Dawning, which includes specialized Ghosts, Ships, and Sparrows players will be able to earn during that event.

Bungie did not announce a date for when Season 2, which will include The Dawning event, will begin.

Our Take
New gear is nice and all, but what I actually want is more stuff to do, not more reasons to do the stuff I'm already doing. I'll probably hop on to earn a set or two or finish off the Prestige version of the Leviathan Raid, but I'm not sure I'll be playing much Destiny until the first expansion hits.
